Nutrition is a main ingredient in a recipe for growth and development of all children in the Head Start program. At CDCFC, our goal is to promote child wellness by providing meal services that supplement and complement those of the home and community. We assist families in meeting each enrolled child’s nutritional needs while establishing good eating habits that support healthy growth and development. Good nutrition also results in increased physical activity levels, well-nourished children are more likely to participate in movement activities throughout the day.
Nourishing breakfast consisting of milk, bread or cereal, and a fruit or juice is provided to the enrolled children including those who are arriving late to get them ready for the day. Breakfast jump-starts the body’s metabolism, the process by which the body converts the fuel in food to energy. Breakfast is a great way to improve the children’s attention span, concentration and memory. Each child enrolled in a center-based program that operates fewer than 6 hours daily receives free meals and snack that provide 1/3 to 1/2 of the child’s daily nutritional needs. Those children who are in a center-based program that operates for 6 hours or more daily receives free meals and snack that provide 1/2 to 2/3 of the child’s daily nutritional needs.
